Iranian hackers gaining access to voter data

Voting started early in Alaska.

US officials said yesterday that Iranian hackers who sent threatening messages to thousands of Americans earlier this month had managed to gain access to the data of a number of voters.

A joint statement by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Internet Security Agency at the Ministry of Homeland Security confirmed the authenticity of a part of a video clip distributed as part of a disinformation campaign that met with short attention, following its disclosure a few days ago.

The campaign is composed of thousands of threatening messages, sent randomly to American voters, in the name of a hard-line right-wing group supporting US President Donald Trump, and it showed a video clip in which a hacker explained how hackers can wreak havoc by penetrating voter registration records.

Experts who examined the clip said it was an attempt to raise voter concern about the integrity of the election.

The office and the Ministry of Homeland Security confirmed, "The perpetrator succeeded in obtaining voter registration data in at least one state."

The statement did not mention the name of the state, but the video clip presented what were supposed to be details of voters in Alaska, and neither the office nor the ministry has yet responded to a request for comment.

The US authorities are preparing to confront any potential cyber infiltration in the presidential elections scheduled for the third of November.
