Arrests of opponents continue in Belarus.

More than 100 people were arrested on Sunday, on the sidelines of opposition protests against the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko, according to Belarusian human rights group Viasna.

The NGO has identified at least 80 arrests in Minsk, the capital, where a new peaceful march brought together tens of thousands of people.

According to her, at least 47 people were also arrested during demonstrations in the provinces, in particular in Gomel, Brest and Grodno.

Brutal arrests

Dressed in red and white, the colors of the opposition, the protesters marched on the avenue des Vainqueurs and headed in the middle of the afternoon towards the Independence Palace, the residence of Alexander Lukashenko, in the north-west of the capital.

Since the contested re-election of Mr. Lukashenko on August 9, demonstrations of historic magnitude have taken place every weekend to demand the departure of the Head of State, in power for 26 years.

Protesters rallied despite the deployment in Minsk of armored vehicles, water cannons and dozens of riot police.

Images broadcast in the evening by local media showed arrests, sometimes brutal, by hooded police.

President Alexander Lukashenko refuses to bow and has requested the help of Vladimir Putin, who has pledged security support in Minsk if necessary and pledged the country a loan of $ 1.5 billion.
