Abu Dhabi Police begins implementing the vehicle seizure law

Starting from yesterday, the Abu Dhabi Police General Command began implementing Law No. 5 of 2020 regarding the seizure of vehicles in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The Director of the Central Operations Sector, Brigadier General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, stated, in a press conference held today at the Directorate's headquarters, that the law does not contradict the Federal Traffic and Traffic Law and came as a result of accurate studies of the reality of statistics of accidents and traffic violations committed by drivers during the past years with the aim of enhancing traffic safety and intensifying violations with the increase in the number of vehicles Urban development and the reduction of wrongdoing.

He stated that the Traffic and Patrols Directorate is constantly working on reviewing and updating the list of applicable legislations and regulations according to the traffic reality and has studied the most dangerous violations that cause accidents in order to deter reckless drivers by toughening penalties and enhancing traffic safety, indicating that the total number of accidents that occurred due to repeated violations that have been amended in Law No. 5 of 2020 amounted to 894 traffic accidents and resulted in the death of 66 people during the year 2019, including 64 fatal accidents, 716 medium accidents, and 543 minor accidents.

He pointed out that the death rate due to the mentioned behaviors out of the total deaths for the year 2019 was 35.5%, and the rate of severe injuries due to the mentioned behaviors out of the total injuries for the same year was 49.6%.

He explained that the law came to increase the fines in order to avoid traffic accidents and reduce the excesses of reckless drivers, which will positively affect the reduction of the causes of death in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, stressing the interest of Abu Dhabi Police and through social media to publish videos to the public to clarify the serious negative effects of these violations and what they cause in terms of deaths and injuries varying between Simple, Medium and Massive.

He reviewed the violations that cause the seizure of vehicles and the financial value of their seizure, as the driver must pay a fine of up to 50 thousand dirhams for deliberately colliding or causing damage to the police patrol, in addition to the violator bearing the value of the damage caused to the patrol, and in the case of participation in races on the road without Prior authorization from the competent authority and when driving a vehicle with number plates, imitated, obscured, or altered, or used in a way that does not comply with applicable legislation and with the knowledge of the vehicle driver.

The driver must also pay the fine of up to 50 thousand dirhams in the event that a vehicle is driven in a way that endangers the driver’s life or the lives of others, their safety or security, and when the vehicle crosses the red light signal, where in this case, in addition to paying the violation, the driving license is withdrawn for the violator for a period of up to 6 months. Starting from the date of revoking the license.

He pointed out that the fine for violations that the vehicle must also be seized amounts to 10 thousand dirhams in the event of changes in the vehicle’s engine or base / chassis / without a license, and up to 5,000 dirhams when / causing / an accident as a result of speed, sudden deviation or failure to leave a distance Sufficient or not to give priority to pedestrians and to allow a child under the age of ten years to sit in the front seat of the vehicle, and when the speed limit is exceeded by more than 60 km / h, while the remaining 100 dirhams for the rest of the cases of seizure for each violation decided to seize the vehicle for it.

He stated that drivers must pay traffic fines in full if the value of traffic fines imposed on the vehicle exceeds 7,000 dirhams.

For his part, Deputy Director of the Central Operations Sector, Brigadier General Ahmed Abdullah Al Shehhi, explained that Abu Dhabi Police worked on studying the gradual hardening of penalties to control violators on the roads, indicating that the more violations, the more accidents, and deterrent measures were necessary to enhance traffic safety, reduce the occurrence of accidents and spread awareness. By applying aware and safe traffic driving, innocent people who are committed to traffic are protected from the seriousness of the consequences of those accidents that cause death and serious injuries.

The Deputy Director of the Central Operations Sector stressed the importance of the preventive command on the roads, pointing to the Abu Dhabi Police’s constant interest in promoting traffic awareness, holding specialized workshops, and introducing the public to the best ways to enhance their traffic safety in accordance with their commitment to traffic laws and regulations through Abu Dhabi Police platforms on social media.

He stressed the commitment of Abu Dhabi Police to maintain a sense of security, pointing to the creation of a strategic priority for the security and safety of the emirate, with the aim of maintaining the first place globally in the "safest cities" index during the past four years 2017-2018-2019-2020, respectively.
