The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday it was impatiently waiting to be able to analyze the results of clinical trials of the vaccine against the new coronavirus, which President Vladimir Putin announced the day before in Russia.
The final phase of testing of this product, in which more than 2,000 people in total will participate, was to begin on Wednesday, the Russian president said at the time.
"The WHO is in contact with the scientists and the Russian authorities and looks forward to studying the details of the clinical trials," reads the press release issued in Geneva, where the organization is headquartered.
"Speeding up research for (obtaining) a vaccine should be done following established processes at each stage of development, to ensure that any vaccine that is ultimately produced is both safe and effective. ", continues the WHO, urging for" rapid, fair and equitable access worldwide to such a vaccine. "
The World Health Organization reacted cautiously on Tuesday to Vladimir Putin's announcement, recalling that the "prequalification" and approval of a vaccine went through "rigorous" procedures.
So far, Russia has not released detailed studies of the results of its trials to establish the effectiveness of the products it says it has created.
