The assault occurred on Thursday afternoon in Le Havre, where an armed man took several people hostage before releasing two later, according to police. The assailant, a single man, has been locked in the premises of a Bred bank in the city center since 4:45 p.m., the communications officer of the Departmental Directorate of Public Security told the AFP agency (DDSP).

Another police source specifies that the man has a gun. Initially, six people were taken hostage and a first one was quickly released. According to the DDSP communications officer, a second person was released before the arrival of the police command.

The 34-year-old assailant is known to have a psychiatric history, a source close to the investigation said. It is also in the archives of the TAJ (criminal record processing) for kidnapping, forced confinement and possession of weapons.
