A team of researchers from various American universities revealed 21 possible treatments for the emerging coronavirus, among hundreds of drugs on the market that have been tested.

A report for the journal, "Nature", said that these drugs will need more research to ensure their ability to help people with corona, but they may relieve researchers of the effort and time to produce new drugs, as developing a new vaccine needs at least 18 months, and the typical schedule for approval of a new antiviral treatment can exceed 10 years.

The researchers tested 11,987 compounds, including compounds that had been approved by the United States' Food and Drug Administration, including those that had reached clinical trials, against the Corona virus.

The report pointed out that 100 of them showed the ability to prevent the virus from developing and spreading in the body.

The team said that 21 of these compounds stopped the reproduction of the virus when the person took a certain dose, and among the list was the drug «Remisdivir», which was previously the subject of many international experiences.

Of these 21 drugs, the team found that 13 of them were effective and could be used safely in people with corona.

"This study greatly expands possible treatment options for patients (SK), especially since many of the compounds have been shown to be safe in clinical trials," said Sumit Chanda, a virologist, from the Sanford Burnham Biwaves Discovery Medical Institute in California.

The 21 drugs are currently being tested using small animal models, or small lungs, that can mimic human tissues.
