- The death toll reached its peak a long time ago and has now steadily declined for several weeks, says Arne Runhagen.

The number of newly confirmed cases of infection has also decreased. This is despite the fact that Region Kronoberg started with general sampling about a week ago. Two percent of all who are tested for covid-19 in Kronoberg are tested positive. When the situation was worst in the county, that proportion was up to 20 percent.

Summer affects the spread of infection

Arne Runhagen believes that a smaller proportion are now tested positive for covid-19 is not due to the fact that the testing now includes the general public.

- I do not think it matters that we test wider groups. Then, as now, those who have symptoms that are compatible with covid-19 are tested, he says.

Arne Runhagen says that it is more likely due to the fact that the spread of infection in the county is decreasing and that people in general have followed the Swedish Public Health Agency's recommendations on good hand hygiene and keeping a social distance. He also believes that the summer can affect the spread of infection.

- A lot has been done to limit the spread of infection. There is less spread now. But you also do not get as cold in the summer as in the winter, says Arne Runhagen.

No infection in nursing homes

Nearly half of all those who died with covid-19 in Sweden have lived in nursing homes. In Kronoberg, no user of any accommodation or staff in the home care service has now confirmed covid-19, for the first time in several months.

Arne Runhagen believes that this is partly due to the fact that all nursing homes have taken strong measures to stop the spread of infection. And partly because the spread of infection has decreased in society as a whole.

- If we do not have a spread of infection in society, healthcare staff will not be able to bring it into their workplace. If you have a spread in the community, healthcare staff will be infected and likely to pass it on. It belongs together, he says.
