The return to containment was ordered on Sunday by regional authorities. However, Spanish justice suspended, this Monday, this home reconfiguration of the inhabitants of an area of Catalonia around the city of Lleida, 150 km from Barcelona. The territory is subject to a strong rebound in Covid-19 cases.

"The Lleida guard court has decided not to ratify the measures of the resolution of July 12" taken by the regional government "because they are against the law," said, on its Twitter account, the superior court of justice of Catalonia. This decision can be appealed by the regional authorities.

"These are necessary measures"

"We are currently looking at how to resolve this from a legal point of view," said regional health manager Alba Verges. These are necessary measures (…) We would not have taken them if it were not absolutely necessary ”. She called on the inhabitants of this area populated by nearly 200,000 inhabitants to stay at their homes, despite the suspension of the reconfinement by the justice system.

Faced with the increase in the number of cases of Covid-19, the Catalan regional government had decided Sunday to order from midnight the home confinement of the inhabitants of Lleida and seven surrounding municipalities, an area located inland about 150 km from Barcelona.

It was the first time since the end of the confinement in Spain that a decision to reconfinish was taken in the country. The area concerned had already been isolated from the rest of Catalonia last Saturday, so that the inhabitants do not leave it.
