The death of the Egyptian journalist, writer Mohamed Mounir, was announced today, Monday, at the Agouza Governmental Hospital in Cairo, due to his infection with the emerging coronavirus "Covid-19", days after his release from an Egyptian prison.

The symptoms of infection with the Corona virus appeared on Mounir during his two-week arrest due to his interference with Al-Jazeera Mubasher, and accusing him of "spreading false news."

Mounir, known for his opposition to the policies of the ruling regime, sent a video distress on July 8th, asking the Press Syndicate to help him enter the hospital for treatment for the Corona virus.

During the video, the opposition journalist appeared to be very tired and unable to breathe.

The Journalists Syndicate entered to provide an ambulance, which transported Mounir to the Mother of Egyptians Hospital in Giza, to carry out medical examinations confirming that he was infected with the Coronavirus, and he was transferred to the quarantine hospital in Agouza.

The late was arrested after criticizing the cover of Rose Al-Youssef magazine, and commenting on him in an intervention on Al-Jazeera TV directly, to be released two weeks after his arrest by decision of the Supreme State Security Prosecution.

And in the middle of last month, Mounir's family announced, in a statement, that he had been kidnapped at 3 am, from his home in Sheikh Zayed, west of Cairo, and taken to an unknown location.

On July 2, the Supreme State Security Prosecution released him without guarantees, and he left the Lehman Hospital, Tora Prison (south of Cairo), which was transferred to him at the time because he was suffering from some diseases.

Munir is a left-wing journalist and prominent dissident. He is a symbol of the Independence Stream in the Journalists Syndicate, and he has articles in more than one media outlet in Egypt and abroad.

The rapid and unsecured release of Mounir after his detention for a few days raised eyebrows, following the conditions of the arrested journalists, and suggested the hypothesis that the authorities feared that he had been infected with the virus, so the decision to release him for fear of infection.

On social media, a number of journalists and jurists mourned Mounir, accusing the Egyptian regime of responsibility for his death.
