In his speech before the Security Council session devoted to discussing the situation in Libya, the Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani said that the only way to solve the crisis in Libya is through a comprehensive ceasefire, a cessation of support for the illegal factions, and the necessity Government support for implementation of the Skhirat Agreement, Security Council resolutions and decisions of the Berlin Conference.

In his speech at the session, the Qatari Foreign Minister demanded that mechanisms be put in place to hold countries accountable that do not abide by international agreements approved by the Security Council.

For his part, Libyan delegate to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni said that his country rejects the UAE's participation in any political dialogue on Libya, asking: What are Emirati soldiers doing in our country? And why they support Haftar? And why are they destabilizing us?

The Sunni described Haftar as a war criminal and could not be a party to a peace agreement, noting that major countries not only provided support for Haftar, but also hindered the holding of any peace conference.

The United States representative at the Security Council, Kelly Kraft, said - at the meeting - that her country opposes every foreign intervention in Libya, and calls for an immediate ceasefire and a return to the 5 + 5 negotiations, along with respecting and enforcing the United Nations arms embargo on all countries, among them Members of this council.

Libya plunged into chaos after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011. Since 2014, Libya is divided, as the internationally recognized government controls the capital, Tripoli and the northwest, and receives support from Turkey, while Haftar governs the East backed by the Parliament of Tobruk, the Emirates, Egypt, and Russia.
