Sometime between 2026 and 2030, the new infantry unit will be in place and now the government is demanding a cost estimate from the defense.
The size of the new regiment is not yet clear. But it should be about one to two battalions. It can be a regiment with about 800 people.
Social Democrat Kalle Olsson sits on the Defense Committee. For him, Tuesday was clearly a day of joy.
- There is no single question that I have worked with as much as this one, he says.
It is the government that has come to the conclusion that the regiment will be located in Östersund. Formally, the decision will be taken by the Riksdag, probably during the autumn.
The question is how do the opposition parties ask themselves?
- I have talked to our defense policy spokesman and he fully supports this decision, says Östersund's moderate municipal council Pär Jönsson.
