In the context of the impact of the new coronary pneumonia epidemic and the complex and changing international situation, what are the characteristics of the recent study abroad industry? What are the new changes?

Britain becomes the preferred destination for studying abroad

According to the data of the "2020 White Paper for Studying in China" (hereinafter referred to as the "white paper") recently released by New Oriental and related market research and consulting companies, 42% of respondents in the survey intend to study abroad in the destination country United Kingdom, up 1% from last year; 37% of respondents preferred the United States, down 6% from last year; 16% of respondents chose Australia and Canada as study abroad countries; followed by Japan, Germany and Singapore .

Relevant experts pointed out that from the data, in the selection tendency of studying abroad countries, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and Canada are still the popular destination countries for Chinese students. However, the more obvious change this year is the first time Britain has surpassed the United States and become the "first choice destination for studying abroad" in the minds of Chinese students. The international situation in the past two years and the advantages of the UK's reopening of PSW visas and the short schooling system have all led to an increase in the proportion of groups that prefer to study in the UK.

At the same time, in the past two years, the enthusiasm for students to study in Japan and Singapore has increased significantly. According to data from the Japan Student Support Organization (JASSO), as of May 2019, Asian students accounted for 93.63% of the total number of international students in Japan. Among the international students in Japan, students from Mainland China ranked first with 124,436, accounting for 39.86%. At the stage of higher education, the number of students in Mainland China is 94047, accounting for 41.18% of international students, ranking first. Among the students enrolled in language schools, there are 30,389 foreign students from Mainland China, accounting for 36.26%, ranking first.

Relevant experts said that Asian countries have become more and more attractive due to similar cultural environment and low cost of studying abroad.

Undergraduate students intending to study abroad are still the main body

The white paper data shows that in terms of the time when the intention to study abroad occurs, the group that has the intention to study abroad at the undergraduate level and plans to study abroad at the graduate level is still the main body, accounting for 46%.

Relevant experts said that in recent years, due to the influence of domestic and international school-running fever, many international schools have emerged as the times require. To some extent, they have shunted the needs of some younger students studying abroad, but they have not weakened or even spawned more people to a certain extent. Undergraduate study needs.

Among the people who intend to study abroad in primary and secondary schools, the data from the white paper shows that the number of students studying in international schools and international classes continues to rise. Relevant experts pointed out that this reflects the parents' gradual recognition of the concept of international education and chooses to let their children enter the international teaching environment in advance to prepare for future study abroad.

Increased proportion of cross-border applications for art majors

In recent years, the art study abroad market has developed rapidly. The white paper data shows that under the background of the epidemic situation in the 2020 application season, the number of applicants choosing art-related majors still shows a clear growth trend.

Hao Bin, president of Sphinx International Art Education, said that the United Kingdom and the United States have always been the main destinations for foreign students studying in the arts category, but this year the application for art study abroad has shown a new trend.

“In the 2020 application season, for Chinese students applying for art majors, the proportion of students who choose to study in Japan, South Korea and the Nordic countries has increased significantly. Among the students applying for art majors in Japan, the target degree is mainly graduate students with an undergraduate background. All are excellent." Hao Bin said.

In addition, more and more students aiming to study art majors are no longer limited to traditional art colleges in the traditional sense. For example, when they apply to study in the United States, the first intention is not to choose like Pratt Institute of Art, Parsons Design Art colleges such as colleges chose comprehensive universities.

It is worth noting that among the students who applied for a postgraduate degree in art, a higher proportion of students applied for cross-specialty. "This means that the majors that these applicants originally studied are not art majors. For example, I have learned examples of students majoring in computer science and engineering. Cross-border applications for design majors and art majors have been successful." Hao Bin said.
