Seattle police are working to vacate a protest zone in the city that has become "lawless and brutal" after weeks of violence, including four shootings and the deaths of two teenagers, the police chief of the city, Carmen Best .
Police action began after Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan declared an "illegal assembly" the gathering of people around the East Police Station and Cal Anderson Park.
"As I have said before, and I will say it again, I support peaceful protests," Best said. "But enough is enough."
Four nights of gun violence in the past 10 days have left two black teenagers dead and two more hospitalized amid a dwindling presence of protesters in the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest Zone (known as 'CHOP' or 'CHAZ' ) next to the abandoned East Police Station.
President Donald Trump has demanded from the start that the state of Washington and Seattle take steps to expel protesters, calling them "domestic terrorists," but as of Wednesday, city officials have adopted a non-confrontational approach .
