The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) called on Arab countries and the international community to take "serious and effective steps" on the ground, to prevent Israel from annexing parts of the occupied West Bank to its sovereignty.

"We appreciate the declared Arab and international positions that reject the Zionist entity's intention to carry out operations to annex large areas of the occupied West Bank," said the movement's spokesman, Hazem Qassem, in a statement on Monday.

Qasim added that what is needed is "more, (we want) serious and effective steps on the ground to pressure the occupation and the American administration to prevent the implementation of this policy."

He pointed out that the media and political positions cannot be satisfied, "because the Zionist entity is accustomed to rebelling against the international consensus, and it always acts as a thief outside the law."

The Israeli government plans to start measures to annex the Jordan Valley and settlements in the West Bank on July 1.

Palestinian estimates indicate that the Israeli annexation will reach more than 30% of the West Bank.

Withdraw recognition

For his part, Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh threatened to withdraw recognition of Israel, stressing that the issue of recognition will be on the table if the chances of establishing a Palestinian state are undermined.

In 1993, then-Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization at the time, Yasser Arafat, signed the Oslo Declaration, which included mutual recognition between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.

Shtayyeh said in an interview with "Palestine" TV yesterday, Monday, that "Israel has violated all agreements signed with it, and with all international obligations, by targeting international law and the consequent regional threat."

He added that "facing the Israeli annexation project is a battle of existence for the Palestinian political entity, and a battle of existence for the national project."

On May 19, President Mahmoud Abbas announced that the Palestinian leadership and the PLO were in the process of dissolving the agreements and understandings signed with Israel because of its intention to annex parts of the West Bank.
