The Trump administration plans to cancel the visas of thousands of Chinese university students and researchers in the US who have direct ties to universities affiliated with the People's Liberation Army. The New York Times writes this, citing American executives who are aware of the dossier. The plan would be the first of its kind to prohibit access for a category of Chinese students, who overall are the largest foreign student population in the United States.

It is likely that the move, conceived and discussed before the tensions with Beijing over the tightening on Hong Kong, will be challenged by universities, not only for the value of international educational exchanges, but also for the fees paid by foreign students, which are essential to cover the costs of the universities.
