May 19, 2020The data on the spread of coronavirus in the country "is encouraging" and, although the struggle will still be long, show that "our collective efforts and sacrifices have paid off".

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte speaks at the closing session of the seventy-third World Health Assembly and recalls Italy's actions against the Covid-19 epidemic.

"We are now easing most of the restrictions, while maintaining rigorous safety measures for every social and commercial activity. We continue to strengthen our healthcare infrastructure, increase intensive care units and hiring doctors and healthcare professionals. We have expanded tests and developed a national monitoring plan in synergy with our local authorities, "he says. Conte said to the representatives of the nations that the current crisis "knows no borders and spares no region" and renews its appeal: "We can only overcome it together, through solidarity, cooperation and mutual responsibility". For the president, states must "strengthen early warning mechanisms, exchange of information, identification of best practices to improve the international community's preparedness for the pandemic".

It is also necessary "to accelerate efforts for a vaccine, for therapeutic and diagnostic tools, and to guarantee universal and fair access to these life-saving treatments. We must not leave anyone behind," stresses the premier, reiterating that it is also "necessary to increase our support to the most vulnerable countries ".

Finally, Conte hopes for a strengthening of the World Health Organization to "improve the global health architecture". "We praise the work of the WHO, often done in very difficult circumstances," he concludes.
