An unexpected consequence of the corona pandemic is that we will probably see an increased number of TBE cases this year and next year. This is what Professor Thomas Jaenson tells us when SVT accompanied him out in search of ticks. "This is because more people are out in the woods instead of being at work or in town," says Jaenson, a professor of medical entomology at Uppsala University and who has researched ticks and tick-borne diseases over the past 40 years.
Many people think that there will be extra ticks this year because winter has been warm and favorable for the spiders, but it doesn't have to be that, according to Jaenson.
- It is mainly the availability of host animals that determines how many ticks we get, says the professor who does not think that you should avoid being in the forest because of the fear of ticks.
