The UN Security Council welcomed the announcement by the Alliance to Support Legitimacy in Yemen of a comprehensive cease-fire in Yemen for a period of two weeks, which could be extended, in order to address the consequences of the outbreak of the new Corona virus.

In a statement issued on Friday evening, the members of the UN Security Council endorsed the call of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the parties in Yemen to cease the immediate ceasefire, focus on reaching a political settlement through negotiation, and make every possible effort to confront the emerging Kurna virus (Covid 19).

They also welcomed the positive response of the Yemeni government to the call for a ceasefire, and called on the Houthis to make similar commitments without delay.

The members of the Security Council also encouraged the two parties concerned in Yemen to continue their cooperation with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, in order to reach a political settlement led by Yemen, owned and inclusive, aimed at addressing the legitimate concerns of all Yemenis. They reaffirmed their previous Council resolutions, including resolution 2216 (2015), stressed their support for the Gulf Cooperation Council initiative, its implementation mechanism, and the results of the National Dialogue Conference, and stressed the need for a comprehensive political process that includes the full and meaningful participation of women.

The statement of the members of the Security Council also touched on the humanitarian crisis, warning that Yemen is exceptionally vulnerable to the Corona virus, and warned that further military escalation in Yemen would hinder the access of humanitarian workers and health care workers, and the availability of necessary health care facilities To cope with an outbreak.

Council members concluded their statement by affirming that there is no military solution to achieve sustainable peace in Yemen, reaffirming their strong commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Yemen.
