A journalist was seriously injured in an assassination gunshot on Monday in Veracruz state, eastern Mexico, local officials said.

"We condemn this cowardly attack on journalist Maria Elena Ferral, Diario de Xalapa correspondent in Papantla," said a local security official in a statement.

The journalist, a reporter for this daily, was about to board her car in central Papantla when two individuals on motorbikes opened fire on her and then fled, according to a police source interviewed by AFP.

She had repeatedly denounced death threats and attacks by local politicians in the region.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to practice journalism. More than 100 journalists have been murdered in the country since 2000 to date.
