The United Nations welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in a number of countries witnessing conflicts following its call to stop fighting in the face of the new Corona epidemic (Covid-19), in a step that will be supported by resolutions of the UN Security Council and the General Assembly of the International Organization.

There was talk of a ceasefire in recent days in the Philippines, Cameroon and Syria.

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, made a call last Monday for an "immediate ceasefire around the world" to protect the most vulnerable civilians in countries in conflict, with the outbreak of the Corona virus emerging.

A diplomat, who asked not to be identified, said that "the five permanent members deliberated a draft resolution regarding the effect of (Corona) on peace and security situations, which was included in the agenda of the UN Security Council."

Another diplomatic source confirmed to Agence France-Presse that "some countries in the United Nations are considering a text aimed at supporting Guterres' appeal."

And identical sources said that France is behind this initiative. French President Emmanuel Macron spoke in a tweet Thursday night, Friday, about preparing an "important new initiative" in the face of the epidemic, after a telephone conversation with his American counterpart, Donald Trump.

For his part, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in New York, "We welcome the temporary ceasefire announced by the Cameroon Defense Forces for the south on March 25." He expressed a similar position regarding a temporary ceasefire declared by the Communist Party of the Philippines with the government of that country on March 24.

The spokesman also welcomed in a new statement "the declaration of the Syrian Democratic Forces issued on March 24" and supports the idea of a ceasefire and "its pledges to avoid military moves" in the northeast of the country.
