Guinea: a massive “yes” to the disputed Constitution

In Guinea, the president of the electoral commission announced this Friday, March 27 in the evening the victory of the "yes" to the constitutional referendum. According to provisional results, the "yes" wins 91.59% of the votes cast last Sunday.

Unsurprisingly, the "yes" won with 91.59% of the vote against only 8.44% who voted "no" for this new Guinean Constitution, according to of course the provisional results announced by the president of the Election Commission National Independent (Céni), Amadou Salif Kébé. He also indicated that the participation rate was estimated at 61%. It only remains for the Constitutional Court to confirm or deny these provisional results by the institution in charge of the elections in Guinea.

Boycott and violence

The opposition and a large part of the civil society grouped within the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) had called for the boycott of this referendum and of the legislative elections whose results are in the process of being held. The call for a boycott to prevent these elections has led to violence between opponents and the police, which have left dozens dead and hundreds injured since October 2019.

According to the Minister of Territorial Administration, Bouréma Condé, hundreds of ballot boxes and polling stations were ransacked or burnt down during the double legislative and referendum poll last Sunday March 22 in Guinea.
