"My class at home": the Ministry of Education presented on Monday the device intended to ensure "pedagogical continuity" in schools and schools closed due to the coronavirus.

Ensure that lessons continue for students in the event of school closure due to coronavirus. This is the objective of the Ministry of National Education, which presented Monday the device "My class at home", deployed by the Cned (National Center for Distance Education). While several establishments are closed in the Oise and in the Morbihan because of the Covid-19 which killed a third person in France on Monday, the ministry wanted to reassure on the educational continuity for the students who would find themselves confined to their homes. This is what has been experienced by the Cned in China, with "more than 2,000 students of French education abroad who use it every day, with satisfaction", according to the direction of school education. Presentation of this device.

How does "My class at home" work?

Two possibilities exist for students whose school is closed and who are forced to study from home:

  • Teaching paths "completely adapted" are offered by their teachers to students, which allow them to advance independently in their school program, details Edouard Jeffrey, director general of school education. Around three or four hours are thus offered each day in different subjects (French, mathematics, history-geography, etc.), via the Cned platform or sent to students by email.
  • A virtual class is also available, "which allow teachers and students to interact as in a class, except that it is by interposed screen", continues Edouard Jeffrey. "A teacher talks from home with his students". Each of them "can complete a live table, answer their comrades, raise their finger, ask a question, work on a document, etc."

    How do we get there?

Confined, the students "continue to learn, but at home, at home, in a slightly different way, via what their teacher sends them by messaging, through digital work spaces, or via the Cned platform", continues- he. The head of the school or the school principal sends the pupil and his family the address of the site, and then we simply connect to it with an email address.

The platform is now open to all students of the Amiens academy whose schools or establishments have been closed; it will be on Tuesday in Morbihan and may be for any student who is prevented from following his schooling normally. "There are ways to have six million simultaneous connections at the moment, so we have a bit of room," says Edouard Jeffrey. This simply requires having a computer, smartphone or tablet, without the need to install software.

For the little ones, an adult is needed with them to accompany them. For older children, on the other hand, we are really working independently, followed by interaction with the teacher, including via the virtual class which ensures that the youngster has taken the course well and that can continue to progress.

What courses are available via distance learning?

During this period of school closure, as is currently the case in the department of Oise or in Morbihan, the idea is to be able to make a mix between independent work and supported work, via these virtual classes. And for the moment, the courses of the programs of the first and second trimesters of the classes of the large sections from kindergarten to the final year are available online. But if this period were to lengthen, the Cned already ensures that it could easily deploy the courses of the third quarter.

This requires a certain organization, for the school head. It is he who regulates things, to ensure that the teacher of French and mathematics do not open their virtual class at the same time.
