A minor detainee committed suicide in Fleury-Mérogis - Philippe LOPEZ / AFP

A 17-year-old detainee, imprisoned at the Fleury-Mérogis remand center, committed suicide Monday night in his cell, we learned this Wednesday from the Evry prosecution. The lifeless body of this young isolated Moroccan miner was found around 10 p.m. by the supervisors, hanged in his cell with his sheets. He had been sentenced on February 5 by a Parisian children's judge for robberies with violence and kept in detention.

As with every death in prison, an investigation was launched into "research into the causes of death". The death was "a shock to the teams in place," said the management of the prison administration (DAP). Suicides by minors in detention are "rare". There was one in 2019. And the suicide of this isolated Moroccan minor is the first in 2020.

21 suicides since the start of the year

Since January 1, a total of 21 detainees have ended their days in French prisons, a significant increase compared to the same period last year, marked by eleven suicides. As of January 1, there were 804 minors detained out of a total of 70,651 prisoners.
