Central African Republic: Minusca grappling with the FPRC in Birao

Advancing towards the IDP camp and that of the Minusca - both are stuck - the UN force and the Central African army are engaged against the FPRC. The situation remains tense in Birao but according to the prefect, the armed group has been routed and driven from the city. At least three elements of the FPRC were reportedly killed during the fighting, which stopped around noon.

Armed elements of the FPRC positioned about twenty kilometers from the city had begun to approach this Thursday, February 13. Fighting that had allowed the group to advance within 10 kilometers of Birao. Two French mirages from N'Djamena in Chad had carried out a close air support mission at the request of the Minusca in order to deter the offensive on the city.

" Save " the peace agreement

In a statement, the FPRC claims to be fighting for " the liberation of Birao " and " is part of the dynamic of saving the APPR-RCA ", the peace agreement signed on February 6, 2019. The FPRC calls on the Central Africans to unite against the Minusca, and calls into question the impartiality of the UN organization. The Minusca spokesman for his part condemns " these extremely serious threats " and affirms that the FPRC will be held responsible if attacks are carried out against the peacekeepers in Birao or elsewhere.
