The fire in Corsica burned more than 3,000 hectares - PASCAL POCHARD-CASABIANCA / AFP

  • The flames, fanned by the Ciara storm, burned more than 3,000 hectares of vegetation in Corsica.
  • This Wednesday, the confinement of several villages, in progress since Tuesday, was lifted.
  • The authorities are waiting for air reinforcements to put an end to this fire.

Containment lifted and wind down: Corsica was blowing a little Wednesday morning awaiting the intervention of planes and helicopters water bombers on the fires which have ravaged thousands of hectares of vegetation for several days, without doing anything victim.

"At daybreak a reconnaissance took place, the teams worked well during the night, they defended the village of Sari and the hamlet of Togna with many means and were able to protect the accesses, so we will lift the confinement" , said Colonel Christophe Frerson, commander of relief operations.

"No more direct threat to the village of Sari"

"There is no longer any direct threat to the village of Sari," said the prefecture of Corse-du-Sud, confirming that residents will be able to move freely today, even if access to the village remains regulated to allow help to work.

In total, the Quenza fire has covered more than 3,000 hectares, according to a provisional estimate made Tuesday evening, and it is evolving towards the village of Solaro where a protection device is in place.

"The priority is to drop water"

For Wednesday, the Prefecture announced the mobilization of "300 firefighters, 80 vehicles, four Canadairs and four helicopters, including two water bombers", stating that there is currently no danger to people or homes.

"The priority is to have the Canadairs dump water at the precise locations that will allow us to make a lock for the spread of fire," explained Colonel Frerson. Firefighters will then be placed by helicopters on sensitive points inaccessible by road. Expected in Corsica in the middle of the morning, the water bomber planes "will make some drops on the fires of Haute-Corse and then they will spend the day" on the fire of Corse-du-Sud, around Quenza, specified Colonel Frerson.
