The authorities in Beijing announced today, Sunday, that the new coronavirus has killed 811 people in China, as a result of which more than the SARS epidemic in 2002 and 2003 worldwide, while the number of confirmed cases of the virus in China exceeded 37,000. This coincides with the announcement by the World Health Organization that it will send a medical delegation to China.

The Chinese National Health Committee said in its daily update of the death toll and injuries, as of Sunday morning, the virus had infected 37,198 people on the Chinese mainland (outside Hong Kong and Macao), that is, more than 2,600 new infections recorded during the past 24 hours.

The committee added that the number of people who killed the virus in the country reached 811, noting that 89 people died on Saturday, the vast majority of them in the central province of Hubei, which the virus first appeared in its capital, Wuhan, in late December.

The eight new deaths were recorded in cities outside Hubei.

Outside the Chinese mainland, only two people have died of the virus, one in the Philippines and one in Hong Kong.

During 2002 and 2003, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which belongs to the new Coronavirus, came from the same strain of the virus, killing 774 people worldwide.

Medical team
Yesterday, Saturday, the World Health Organization announced that the number of new infections recorded daily in China had become "stable", noting at the same time that this did not necessarily mean that the epidemic had passed its peak.

The organization revealed that it would send a medical team to China, and said in a statement that it had received a positive response from Beijing, and that its team would leave on Monday or Tuesday.

She explained that the American experts, who are also scheduled to go to China, will be on the organization’s team.
