The United States has requested an in camera meeting of the UN Security Council on Thursday for a presentation by Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner of the US peace plan for the Middle East rejected by the Palestinians, AFP learned from diplomatic sources on Monday.

It aims for Washington to expose this American plan unveiled last week and to hear the positions of the 14 other member states of the Council, specified the same sources.

Just before the Palestinian President's arrival in New York

This meeting will take place a few days before the arrival in New York of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, expected on February 11 according to diplomats, to demonstrate at the UN its opposition to the American project and to demand the application of international law.

During the visit by President Abbas, the Palestinians indicated that they intended to submit a draft resolution to the Security Council, through Tunisia, a non-permanent member of the Council.

A resolution in talks

No indication has so far filtered on the content of this future resolution which the United States should oppose, if necessary using its right of veto if the text received during the ballot the minimum required of nine favorable votes for its adoption.

At the end of 2017, a Palestinian-inspired resolution to condemn Washington's unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel had won 14 favorable votes, but the United States had vetoed its adoption.

A similar resolution proposed in the wake of the UN General Assembly, composed of 193 members and where the right of veto does not exist, had received 128 votes for, 9 against and 35 abstentions while 21 countries had chosen to not be present.

Jared Kushner is the architect of the peace plan revealed almost a week ago by President Donald Trump and which was rejected on Saturday by the Arab League, then Monday by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

A plan very favorable to Israel

He grants many concessions to Israel, notably by proposing to create a capital of a possible Palestinian state in Abu Dis, a suburb of Jerusalem. The Palestinians want to make the whole of East Jerusalem the capital of their state.

In his project, Donald Trump also plans to annex all of the Israeli settlements, as well as the Jordan Valley in the West Bank, the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967.

No details could be obtained immediately from the American mission at the request of the United States for a meeting of the Security Council.

In a statement on Saturday, the Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, announced that he was engaged in a campaign at the UN to persuade its members not to support Palestinian action hostile to the plan.

"Mahmoud Abbas must understand that the speeches in New York will not lead to the resolution of the conflict between Jerusalem and Ramallah. The international community must admit that Abbas is the only one to oppose peace," he said. .
