The United States has announced the arrest of a man accused of being the leader of a group of "Al Qaeda terrorists" whose Iraq has requested extradition to try him for trial. assassination of two police officers in 2006.

Ali Youssef Ahmed Al-Nouri, 42, lived in Phoenix, Arizona, according to a statement from the United States Department of Justice on Friday. Iraq has formally requested his extradition for two assassinations in Fallujah in June and October 2006, of a police officer and a policeman, respectively. Based on the Iraqi extradition request, an American judge issued an arrest warrant on January 29, and the FBI arrested the man the next day, Thursday. Extradition will have to be certified by a judge, and the decision to extradite will ultimately rest with the US Secretary of State.

It is unknown how and when the man ended up in the United States, and whether he had a visa, but prosecutors refer to him as a "resident" of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The ministry says the charges remain presumed until proven in court.
