After the controversy generated by the elimination of the Secretary of State for Latin America , the Government has decided to rectify and take another turn to finally maintain that name in a Secretary of State, yes, merged with that of Foreign Affairs .

It was the minister herself, Arancha González Laya, who announced this rectification on Twitter. The final version of its department will include Latin America in its organizational chart, above the General Directorate that will deal with this strategic area for Spain . The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs will finally be called the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and with Latin America and the Caribbean .

As González Laya has justified on Twitter, this region of the world "unites us a special relationship". The Government's decision to eliminate the Secretary of State for Latin America, which historically has existed with all governments, had generated widespread discomfort both in the ministry and in the PSOE itself.

It remains to be seen if the Foreign Ministry of State changes only the name or if Latin America continues to have the weight it had so far. According to foreign sources, in no case will Latin American policy reduce its rank in the Government of Pedro Sánchez.

Royal Decree 136/2020 , of January 27, which restructures the ministry establishes that Foreign Ministry will have four State Secretariats: Foreign Affairs and for Latin America and the Caribbean , European Union , International Cooperation and Global Spain .
