The Fujairah Misdemeanor Court has begun hearing the case of two foreign captains accused of polluting the beaches of Fujairah and the city of Kalba, and causing losses of 14 million dirhams.

The details are due to the fact that two merchant ships collided in the waters of the Emirate of Fujairah, which resulted in the flow of large quantities of diesel that led to the pollution of the sea and its extension to the beaches of the cities of Kalba and Fujairah, causing damage amounting to 14 million dirhams, and the ships were seized until the necessary investigations were completed.

The court adjourned the case until next week so that an interpreter fluent in the language of the country of the first accused could be brought in to take his statements.

The lawyer of the first accused demanded the removal of the seizure decision on the ship belonging to its owner, especially after the report of the criminal laboratory regarding the charges against him was submitted, indicating that the detention decision causes losses to the accused, and the court rejected the request until the court sessions are completed.

It is noteworthy that oil spots appeared during the past year, specifically in October in the early hours of the morning, inside the sea water, before being swept by water currents to the beaches of the cities of Fujairah and Kalba, to cover more than three kilometers along the beaches, and cause the spread of petroleum odors penetrating the Along the region, eastern region fishermen have refused to go out for fishing trips because of pollution that directly affects the marine environment and fish stocks.
