In the Comoros, we vote this Sunday, January 19 for the 1st round of the legislative elections. The opposition did not send candidates to these elections deciding to boycott them. The atmosphere is fairly calm in the country. An African Union observer mission arrived three days ago. Its leader was received by President Azali Assoumani on Saturday. Nothing seems to taint the smooth running of this election.

It is a first round of legislative elections which is announced calmly today. The opposition announced several months ago that it would not participate in this election to denounce the control of the executive power over the CENI and the constitutional chamber of the Supreme Court.

Never mind, the different parties from the presidential movement sent their candidates in dispersed order one against the other in most constituencies.

On the side of the voters, one has the feeling that it will necessarily be always President Azali who wins, whatever the result. The electoral campaign was also a very confidential moment. A few meetings here and there, but nothing to do with the countryside atmosphere to which the country is used. This year there was no song dedicated to the candidates in the streets nor displays of fabrics in the colors of parties or currents.

Some people even say that they do not know when the votes they will guess will take place thanks to the few posters. A mission of 40 observers from the African Union is however on the ground to in particular ensure that the conduct of the elections contributes to democratic governance.
