Don Bryden, the managing director of a recruitment agency in Swindon (United Kingdom) has decided to give his non-smoking employees four additional days of paid vacation. The director of KCJ Training and Employment Solutions thus intends to fight against a difference in treatment disadvantaging employees who do not smoke. "I want to make sure that those who sit and work while others take their cigarette break receive some sort of compensation," the boss told BBC.

"With three 10-minute cigarette breaks each day, we arrive at 16 and a quarter days throughout the year on the basis of an eight-hour day," calculates Don Bryden, himself a smoker. As for those who take only one daily break, they spend five days a year smoking at work.

More leave for those trying to quit?

The director said he had the idea for the new regulation when he discovered in the media that it was already applied in certain companies in Japan, says Ouest-France . The measure is well passed with smokers as well as non-smokers, assures the leader and this one defends any discrimination towards cigarette lovers.

"What I'm saying is if you take a break, fine, do it." I'm not asking anyone to stop, ”he says. Don Bryden indicated, however, that he was ready to support employees who wished to become non-smokers. He also promises an additional day off to anyone who stops smoking for three months. And two days for six months of abstinence. "Remember, a healthier workplace makes people happier," said the director.
