His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, headed the country's delegation participating in the Berlin International Conference on Libya, which concluded its work yesterday at the Chancellery Court in the German capital under the auspices of the United Nations and with the high international participation of heads and foreign ministers of a number of countries in the world and a number of organizations International.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised the efforts of the Federal Republic of Germany to host this important international conference that seeks to find a political settlement to the crisis in Libya.

His Highness affirmed that the UAE has always sent its message to the world a message of peace and development and supports achieving security and stability in sisterly Libya based on non-interference in its internal affairs and assisting the brotherly Libyan people and supporting its legitimate aspirations to consolidate the pillars of its national state and achieve unity and development.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised the United Nations' sponsorship of this important international conference and noted the efforts of the UN envoy to Libya, stressing the importance of building on the outputs of the Berlin Conference in order to reach a political solution that contributes to achieving security and stability for the brotherly Libyan people.

His Highness also affirmed the strategic and stable relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Federal Republic of Germany that are witnessing continuous growth and development, and keenness to strengthen them and develop areas of joint cooperation in a way that benefits the peoples of the two friendly countries.

On the sidelines of the conference, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan met in Berlin, the United States of America, Minister Mike Pompeo.

During the meeting, they discussed aspects of cooperation, coordination and joint work between the two friendly countries in all fields.

The two sides discussed developments in the region and a number of regional and international issues of common concern, foremost of which are the situation in Libya and the important role of the Berlin Conference in finding a settlement to the crisis in Libya.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan stressed during the meeting the friendly relations and strategic cooperation that unites the United Arab Emirates and the United States of America and the constant concern to strengthen them and develop areas of joint cooperation between the two friendly countries.

During the meeting, they discussed areas of joint cooperation and ways to enhance and develop them between the two sides.

The two sides reviewed a number of regional and international issues of common concern, including the Libyan issue, and the role of the Berlin Conference in finding a settlement to the Libyan crisis.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan stressed the UAE’s keenness to enhance cooperation fields with friendly European Union countries and joint work for peace and stability in the region.

The Berlin conference on Libya concluded its activities by announcing the participants their commitment to the United Nations resolution to ban the export of arms to Libya and stop providing military support to the parties to the conflict.

Participants in the closing statement signed by 16 countries and organizations agreed to make international efforts to strengthen control of the arms embargo.

The statement called for the demobilization and disarmament of the militias and the imposition of sanctions on the party that violates the armistice.

The statement called for reforming the security sector in Libya to work to limit the use of force to the state alone. It also stipulated respect for international humanitarian law and human rights, and holding accountable all those involved in attacks on civilians or populated areas and kidnappings and extrajudicial killings.

The statement also called for a fair and transparent distribution of oil revenues.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the participants in the Berlin conference welcomed the reduction of escalation in Libya.

She added, in her speech to a press conference after the end of the Berlin conference, that it was agreed with regional organizations, the European Union and the League of Arab States on the need for a political solution to the crisis in Libya.

In her speech, Merkel noted that the priority during this period is to stabilize the ceasefire and impose a sustainable truce in Libya,
Explaining that «the United Nations proposed to hold a 5 + 5 meeting on Libya».

Merkel described the results of the conference as a new political start and a boost in order to support the United Nations efforts to bring peace to Libya.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for the necessity of preventing sending Syrian mercenaries loyal to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Libya.

Macron also suggested that the United Nations negotiate the terms of a truce in Libya without imposing preconditions by any party.

In turn, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that there is a need to resolve the conflict in Libya, stressing the futility of a military solution to the crisis.

Guterres added that all the parties participating in the Berlin Summit announced their commitment not to interfere in Libya.

He explained that there will be a meeting after two weeks to discuss the economic reform measures to be applied in Libya.

For his part, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that a follow-up committee will be established to ensure the implementation of the outputs of the Berlin Conference and start its work in February under the auspices of the United Nations.

While Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that his country is trying to overcome the Libyan crisis by strengthening the ceasefire.
