“This morning (December 25 - RT ), an outstanding Soviet and Russian military leader, president of the Academy of Military Sciences, doctor of military and historical sciences, and World War II veteran Mahmut Akhmetovich Gareev suddenly died,” the press service said.

Gareev’s death was reported by his family.

Mahmut Gareev served in the army for more than 50 years. During the Great Patriotic War, he participated in the battle of Moscow in 1941 and in the fighting as part of the Western, 3rd Belorussian and 1st Far Eastern fronts, received several wounds, was shell-shocked.

In the post-war years, he served in command and staff positions in the Far Eastern, Belorussian, Ural military districts, was the head of the headquarters of a military adviser in Egypt, and also served as military adviser to the president, supreme commander in chief of the Afghan armed forces.

In April, it became known about the death of a hero of the Soviet Union, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, a participant in the Victory Parade on Red Square Dmitry Bakurov.
