During three weeks in November, fifth graders in Trollhättan and Uddevalla became involved in the Textile Hunt and together they collected almost 2.5 tonnes. Everything was then taken care of by Trollhättan Energi and Uddevalla Energi for further transport to Wargön Innovation in Vargön.

An additional 4.5 tonnes were collected in Vänersborg, where the municipality's unit for Cycle and Water went around the districts Öxnered, Blåsut and Onsjö and collected textiles exhibited by residents.

Increase awareness

- Now everything that comes from the three places is sorted. More than 75 per cent, corresponding to more than five tonnes, goes to reuse via second hand stores in favor of charitable purposes. It shows how much clothing and textiles we have that can come in better use, says Susanne Eriksson.

About 25 per cent could not be recycled, but according to Susanne Eriksson most of it will be recycled in another way. A smaller part, equivalent to about 400 kilos, is converted into energy through combustion.

The purpose of the new Trestad initiative The textile hunt is primarily to increase everyone's awareness of not throwing clothes, shoes and textiles in the garbage instead of being reused or recycled.

- It takes a lot of energy, water and chemicals to make textiles and clothes, which in turn puts a huge strain on the environment, says Susanne Eriksson.
