On Saturday, German media arrested two Syrians with an explosive device, and evacuated the Christmas market in Berlin, which witnessed a bloody attack three years ago, local media reported.

"Our colleagues are now working in the Braichtiplats Christmas market and vacate it to track indications of a possible suspicious object," Berlin police said on Twitter.

"All visitors left the Christmas market quietly and in an organized manner. We thank you. Our colleagues began researching the Praetietsplatz and the Memorial Church."

The mass-circulation Bild newspaper reported on its website that the police detained two Syrian men with experience in explosives, without attributing this to any source.

The police said that a celebration of the Kaiser Wilhelm Church "was also completed ahead of schedule for this reason."

Tunisian Anas al-Amiri killed 12 people in this market when he stepped on to a truck he was driving in crowds celebrating Christmas in 2016, and later Italian police shot al-Amri dead.
