The woman's application is rejected on the grounds that the character combination can be perceived as offensive. Even a man from Bankeryd gets no on his application for a personal registration plate. He wanted INSANE on his car.

And more and more people want a personal registration plate. Nearly 4,000 applications have been made this year, which is a new record.

- We receive applications of all ages, from born in the 1920s to the 2000s, says Eva Isaksen, investigator at the Swedish Transport Agency.

Lots of geography

The possibility of applying for a personal registration plate was introduced in 1988. After a dipping in the early 2010s, this year's applications have already broken the record listing last year. In 2019, 3,897 applications were received.

- A clear trend we see is that many new Swedes want signs with place names or places from their home country. It is a lot of geography, we see that markedly, says Eva Isaksen.

The Swedish Transport Agency receives an average of 20–40 applications per day, according to Isaksen. Some times a week the pressure is greater than others.

- We can say that there are often many applications from young people during the weekend, says Eva Isaksen.

10 percent offensive

Obscene or offensive messages are not allowed, nor are religious or other culturally sensitive expressions. In addition, all applications are reviewed by staff, so even if, for example, "snipping" is available on the Swedish Transport Agency's website, unlike "snipping", there is no guarantee that the application will go through.

- An estimated 10 percent of everything that comes in is so offensive, says Eva Isaksen.
