The Algerian Army's Chief of Staff congratulated Lieutenant-General Kayed Saleh on Saturday, Abdelmajid Taboun, who won the presidential elections, considering him "the successful choice" to lead the country.

In a congratulatory message published by the Ministry of Defense website, he said, "I would like to address all citizens (...) with the best of appreciation and gratitude and gratitude for their strong participation in the important national merit and successful selection in all transparency, integrity and awareness of Mr. Abdul Majeed Tabun as President of the Republic."

Taboun, 74, became the new president of Algeria to succeed Abdelaziz Bouteflika - who resigned under street pressure - after winning the first round of the presidential elections that took place on Thursday, with a rate of 58.15% of the vote.

The chief of staff described Taboun as "the right and seasoned man capable of leading Algeria", wishing him "success and success in his duties."

An invitation to dialogue
The strongman in the country since the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April, stated that "the army will remain supportive of the president chosen by the people."

The participation rate was 39.83%, or nearly ten million voters out of more than 24 million registered in the electoral lists.

Abdel-Majid Taboun, the former prime minister, thanked in his first statement after announcing the results on Friday, "The leadership of the army, headed by Lieutenant-General Kayed Saleh," to secure the elections and protect the movement "without a single drop of blood being shed within ten months."

He also called on the popular movement for a "direct and serious" dialogue for a "new republic" through a new constitution and election law guaranteeing "the separation of politics and money."

Taboun presented during his election campaign a program containing 54 pledges, and pledged to continue combating corruption witnessed by the country during the next stage.
