"I'm still breathing": Francesca Schiavone, the first Italian Grand Slam winner at Roland Garros in 2010, announced Friday that she "conquered" cancer, in a video message posted on Instagram.

"After 7-8 months of silence (...) I would like to tell you what happened to me. I was diagnosed with cancer. I did chemotherapy, the battle was tough, and I am breathing always. I won in this fight. And now I'm back, "said Schiavone.

The 39-year-old Milan native did not say which cancer she suffered from.

She ended her career after the 2018 US Open. She had risen to 4th place in the world in 2011, a few months after winning the French Open, one of her "dreams".

In total, Schiavone, at least quarter-finalist in each of the four Grand Slam tournaments, has won eight trophies in his career, as well as three Fed Cups with Italy (2006, 2009 and 2010).
