The coal boiler in Värtaverket is Stockholm's single largest source of fossil emissions, and Sweden's eighth largest source of carbon dioxide.

Now it closes at the turn of the year instead of being phased out until 2022, which was previously decided.

"This has been a very important part of our strategy to move towards being completely resource and climate neutral in our district heating production in Stockholm," says Per Ytterberg, Head of Business Development at Stockholm Exergi, to SVT Stockholm.

In 2019, tax regulations were changed for the use of fossil fuels in cogeneration plants, which has resulted in significantly increased costs for using the coal boiler. This has also affected the decision.
