Late on Monday evening, police were alerted to Skiftinge in Eskilstuna due to a dispute between a man and a woman.

Exactly what happened when the police arrived at the scene is not clear. But the intervention has gained attention after video clips from the incident were published by Eskilstuna-Kuriren.

"Panicked"

SVT News has talked to a woman who witnessed and filmed the police intervention. In the film, which SVT has also seen, you can see how a policeman punches a person lying on the ground and then drops the person in the feet with his face to the ground.

- I panicked. The man being dragged seemed lifeless, I thought he was going to die. He was completely silent at the end, not a sound, the witness says.

Another video from the incident shows how the cop pushes fists with snow inside the person's jacket.

- No matter what they have done, if they are armed or have drugs, the police should not do so. The man said he had given up, but police beat him and said it didn't help anymore, the witness says.

"Reacting as Police Chief"

Mikael Backman, police officer in Södermanland, has seen the video clips that were published this week.

- Of course, I respond as responsible police officer in Södermanland. The spontaneous reaction is that this feels wrong, he tells SVT News.

An investigation into service errors has now been added and the current police officer has been removed from external service. According to Mikael Backman, the intervention has also been documented by the police and the material has been handed over to the Special Investigations Department.

- Police are subjected to great stress in everyday life, for example through violence and threats. Despite this, the police always have to observe self-control and act in a way that inspires confidence, says Mikael Backman.

The man who was arrested is suspected of violent resistance, minor drug offenses and violations of the Knife Act and the woman of violent resistance, violence against official and minor drug offenses.
