Five people died Wednesday in Sicily in the explosion of a warehouse and a fireworks factory , widely used in Italy during New Year's Eve parties, Italian firefighters and police said.
The two explosions occurred in a warehouse and a fireworks factory of the family business Costa, in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto , in the department of Messina .
Two employees of an external company that carried out maintenance work, and the wife of the factory owner, 71, died at the scene. One of the injured died in the hospital and a worker who had disappeared was found dead in the rubble. Three other people were injured. Firefighters continued to search for other possible victims.
"It seems that there were two explosions because inside the factory there were workers with welders. The sparks would have reached the pyrotechnic dust, causing the explosions, " Giancarmine Carusone, commander of the Barcellona carabineros, told reporters.
The local prosecutor initiated an investigation to determine the causes of the explosion.
