It was after two days of negotiations that the regional council could decide on the budget for next year, 2020. A shock test was about, and how much, the tax would be raised.

The background is the economic situation in Kalmar County. The financial forecasts for 2019 point to a deficit of SEK 120 million.

"Save or raise taxes"

"In order for the region to achieve the financial results needed to finance future needs, there are two options: drastic savings or increased tax collection," wrote three regional councils in a debate article earlier this fall.

So it has now been decided - the tax will be increased by SEK 49, which will give the region SEK 250 million more in the cash register each year.
