It was last weekend that early morning Skagenbor discovered that a nature-protected sand dune on Sønderstrand had shrunk considerably. Three to four thousand cubic meters of sand is estimated to have been excavated and the soil leveled.

Many in the area, who protect their high "dunes," are upset. So did Mayor Birgit S Hansen (S) in the municipality of Fredrikshavn.

-It is not unknown that some people think the dunes are in the way. I have no idea who did this, but it is very stupid, disrespectful and outright illegal, ”she tells Danmarks Radio.

"Individual playing police"

Since then, the tone has been tough not least in social media. Specific addresses and homeowners near the beach have been identified as suspicious. The mayor has been given several tips about who the guilty parties can be. She now calls for reflection and urges residents not to "play police".

Police are investigating the incident and are looking for witnesses who may have seen a wheel loader or similar in the area the current date, possibly on a trailer. Technical tracks from vehicles have been secured on site, reports the Ritzau news agency.
