A study just published by ANSES points to the frequent confusion between healthy squash and toxic squash. Sandra Sinno-Tellier, head of toxicovigilance at ANSES, takes stock of the micro in Europe 1.

Alert, toxic squash! In this Halloween period, cucurbits should be handled with care, says a study by the National Agency for Food Safety (ANSES). Between 2012 and 2018, some 353 cases of poisoning with pumpkin or other pumpkin were identified.

Decorative gourds, toxic gourds

Two confusions can lead to intoxication, details the study. The type of squash first, food or decorative, the second is not edible. "When you buy them in the garden, at the supermarket, or florist, we must seek the advice of the seller before consuming," warns Sandra Sinno-Tellier, head of toxicovigilance at ANSES, at the microphone of Europe 1.

The second risk is this time in some food squash. "By a pollination effect, they can become toxic," warns Sandra Sinno-Tellier. Be careful not to use the same seeds from one year to another if you plant squash in your garden. "You absolutely have to buy new ones every year."

Bitter gourds, toxic gourds

Precautions are all the more important as in appearance, nothing distinguishes a toxic squash from a healthy squash. "We recognize them to taste, toxic cucurbits are very bitter." The unpleasant taste comes from cucurbitacins, irritants that cause severe diarrhea if ingested, with a risk of dehydration for the weakest people.

Sandra Sinno Tellier's recommendations are clear: "If swallowed, seek immediate medical attention or contact the Poison Control Center. In case of severe symptoms call 15 directly."
