24 October 201912.52 Uighur economist Ilham Tohti, who fights for the rights of his minority in China, won the Sakharov Prize 2019 for freedom of thought, awarded by the European Parliament. Tohti is serving a life sentence in China on charges of separatism. The European Parliament, president Sassoli said, also asked that "be immediately released by the Chinese authorities". The other finalists were Marielle Franco, Chief Raoni and Claudelice Silva dos Santos, and The Restorers.
