- The teacher gets just as much power as before, but you do not have time to talk about the mobiles, says Education Minister Anna Ekström (S).

But the question is whether the new law will have any impact at all. The proposal contained in the January agreement, the agreement between the Social Democrats, the Center Party and the Liberals, means that mobile bans in the classrooms will be the starting point. Today, it is up to the respective principal to decide on the school's policy within the framework of the rules.

"Difficult to create fully protected zone"

We have asked 74 primary school principals in Sörmland about how a national mobile ban will affect their school. 50 of them believe that this does not mean a significant change, as they have today decided to ban mobile in the classrooms in their rules of procedure.

“Obviously, it is a little easier for us to have a law room to refer to, but checking compliance is just as difficult when it is a law as it is to have it in the school's own rules of procedure. Today, the use of mobiles in different contexts is so established in society that it is difficult to create a completely protected zone in the school, ” replies one of the principals.

At the same time, there are principals who see an important symbolic value in a national mobile ban.

If there is a national mobile ban, it will be less difficult for every school business to introduce. I do not think it will be a huge difference, but if there is a difference, it is probably more positive than negative. Mobiles and social media are one of the most difficult problems the school has faced in many years. Not even adults handle this in a good way, so what can you expect from 13-15 year olds… ”

Have mobiles in the classroom

At the Österåkersbygdens friskola school in Vingåkers municipality, students get their own phones when they start in fourth grade.

- We think it works really well, says Anna Förssevi, the school's principal.

What do you think of the proposal with a national mobile ban?

- I think we have to take responsibility in this matter at school. We can handle this issue. We are competent, we are professional and we can make these decisions. We don't need a national guardian who tells us how to handle this.
