The new trees will replace the trees that are cut down along Hamngatan, Lasarettsgatan and within the area, Linköping Municipality writes on its site.

The County Administrative Board has decided that a native species of deciduous trees should be planted.

- It is important that the trees are given the opportunity to grow without coming into conflict with houses or larger vehicles that will traffic the streets. The trees will be planted late during the construction process so that they are not damaged during the construction period, says Mikael Klingefjord, overall project manager, planning office, Linköping Municipality.

"It may be slightly different species"

The municipality applied for an exemption from the general biotope protection that applies to alleys. The decision taken by the county administrative board emphasizes that deciduous trees of a native species should be planted.

What kind of deciduous tree then?

- You have to discuss that, there are a lot of deciduous trees. There will be trees that are of different sizes when grown, so they will fit in. This may mean that there will be slightly different species, says Mikael Klingefjord to Svt Nyheter Öst.

When can the trees stand in place?

- They will be deployed successively in different stages, as streets and houses are completed, says Mikael Klingefjord.

The alleyways around Linköping's folk lakes have been a lengthy process, but after two years, in early September it was clear that the trees could be cut down. The municipality wanted to cut down the trees. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency thought differently and the trees remained standing. Land and the environmental court finally decided that the trees should be felled.
