The French NGO Action contre la faim announced on Wednesday (September 25th) that one of its employees had been executed by a jihadist group in the north-east of the country. Nigerian, he was kidnapped last July with five other people still held hostages.

In a statement, Action Against Hunger condemns the killing of one of its employees and calls for the release of five other hostages. The NGO recalls that they are present in the north-east of the country only to help the most vulnerable populations.

All were kidnapped during the attack on their convoy in July 18 on the road between Maiduguri and the city of Damasak. One of the drivers was killed during the ambush. The Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP) , affiliated with the Islamic State group, is particularly active in the region and has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

The UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria is appalled by the news and concerned by the increasingly dangerous context in which humanitarian organizations operate, caught between the armed groups and the regular army.

Last week, the Nigerian army closed the offices of Action Against Hunger in the region. It regularly accuses NGOs of distributing food and medicines, which then fall into the hands of Islamist fighters.
