18 September 2019The European Parliament has approved an allocation of over 293 million euros in aid from the EU Solidarity Fund, following extreme weather events in 2018 in Italy, Austria and Romania. Most of the funding, 277 million, will go to Italy and the funds will have to be used for reconstruction in the affected regions. In the autumn of 2018 almost all the Italian regions were affected by heavy rains, winds, floods and landslides, with several deaths and material damage.

The damages caused by the bad weather were serious interruptions of the road and river networks, flooding of public and private buildings, interruptions of the electricity and gas networks, as well as significant losses in the timber and tourism sectors. The funding was launched with 645 votes in favor, 18 against and 30 abstentions. The 293.5 million euros of the European Union Solidarity Fund are divided as follows: 277.2 million euros for Italy, 8.1 million euros for Austria and 8.2 million euros for the region northeastern Romania.
